You know there are times when you get together with a group of people and you come up with some fun ideas to do but then weeks go by and it never happens because nobody really takes the lead and sets a date and make it happen? Well I wanted to make sure that didn’t happen when a group of us local photographers started talking about getting together to shoot. It all started as just a light conversation at the first Thursday Therapy hosted by Kelly Simants of Sweet Pea Events. A group of photographers were talking about how fun it would be to all get together and shoot something one evening. That sounded like so much fun to me and I really wanted to get a group of us together and really make it happen! So I took it upon myself to find some models and to set a date. Thus began the first Dallas Photographer Shootout, I wanted us all to just do what we do best and have some fun doing it! I picked a time that gave us enough daylight for those who rock the natural light and then after sunset for those that rock off-camera flash. I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed getting together with my “colleagues” in the area and watch them work their magic. I am so blessed to live in the Dallas/Ft.Worth area because there is some amazing talent in the area of wedding photographers. The best thing about it is that a great majority of us all know each other and are more friends and colleagues rather than enemies or competition. These are the type of people I enjoy surrounding myself with, I don’t bother with any other type of drama that may or may not go on in the industry. This group of people and others that were not able to join us are all about supporting each other any way we can. If you are new to the wedding photography world I suggest you find the same type of people!
Speaking of these wonderful photographers, here is a list of the rockstars who were able to join us for the fun filled evening:
Andrea Crosswhite, Allison Davis, Amy Karp, Catie Ronquillo, Celina Gomez, Jason Anderson, Jason Huang, Josh Littrell, Magaly Abbott, Stacy Reeves & Stephen Brown. I strongly suggest you visit each of these photographers and check out some of their amazing work. I am so happy to know all of these people! All of them will be sharing images from the shootout as well so it will be fun to see everyone’s little spin on the shootout.
Now before I go on and share some of my favorite images from the shootout I have to send out a huge THANK YOU to our models Tod and Ashley!!! Ashley was a teacher at one of the elementary schools I taught at when I was teaching elementary art, and I saw on facebook that she was engaged to Tod and I asked her if they would be interested in being our models for the evening and in exchange get some amazing engagement photos. They were both pumped about the idea and so excited to even be considered since they didn’t feel like they were ‘models’. But after you go through some of these images you wouldn’t be able to tell a difference! I know it had to be so weird for them to be on that side of the camera having 15 people with cameras follow them around everywhere. Ya’ll did such an awesome job and I can’t thank you enough for coming out with us and having fun! This is the most I have ever written for a blog post. So I think I better stop and share. I am going to create a behind the scenes post as well, so stay tuned. Enjoy!

One possible downside of being married to a photographer is that you have to be ready for a camera in your face even when you don’t necessarily want one there. Granted it doesn’t happen very much with me though, since I do it as a full-time job I don’t really pick up the camera much for “leisure” because of the way my mind works even shooting for leisure can feel like “work” which means I can’t relax and just enjoy moments. But in this instance I had an itch to shoot and to get out my large softbox, so when my wife got home after a long day of teaching I begged her to let me shoot her in our backyard. She had on a cute outfit that day and it was a good reason to practice all the things she has learned this season of America’s Next Top Model, ha. Major props go out to my beautiful wife for striking poses and getting that smeyezing on(smiling with the eyes according to Tyra). Thank you Jess for being my model for a little bit and putting up with me and those pesky mosquitoes! Oh and thanks for letting me share these online with everyone. Leave a comment and let her know what you think!
